Walk with spiritual protection in this powerful Trash Hoodie featuring the He Mano Ka Niho (multitudinous shark teeth) pattern. Made from 100% reclaimed waste cotton terry in a deep Pō (black) colorway with discharge ink printing that reveals the natural reclaimed fabric beneath—a transformative process that mirrors the spiritual journey from darkness into light. pattern: He Mano Ka Niho - Multitudinous Shark Teeth
fit: puffy, boxy, cropped (sits at or above hip)
technique: discharge ink printing (removes reactive dye to reveal natural fabric color)
colorway: Pō (black)
model: 5ʻ7”, 160lbs, wearing a size M
Cultural Significance - He Mano Ka Niho & the Pairing with Pō:
The "He Mano Ka Niho" pattern is a traditional Hawaiian motif that has been used since ancient times in kāpala (bark cloth printing), carving, and adornment. The name carries layered kaona (hidden meaning): "mano" refers to the Hawaiian numbering system meaning multitudinous—traditionally 400, 4,000, 40,000, or 400,000—representing abundance and countless repetition. When read as "manō," the word shifts to mean shark, allowing for additional spiritual interpretation if the wearer chooses to bring that intention to the garment.
The niho mano (shark tooth) pattern appears throughout Hawaiian material culture—in lei niho pāloa (whale tooth pendants worn by aliʻi), in weapons, and in decorative arts. This geometric pattern represents the sharp, repeating forms of shark teeth arranged in rows, creating a design that is both aesthetically powerful and culturally significant. It honors the craftsmanship of our kūpuna (ancestors) who created intricate patterns that carried meaning across generations.
The Pairing with Pō:
The Pō colorway was intentionally selected to pair with the He Mano Ka Niho pattern, creating a visual and conceptual connection rooted in Hawaiian cosmology. In Hawaiian worldview, Pō represents the realm of night, darkness, ancestors, and the primordial void from which all creation emerged. Pō is not simply absence of light—it is the sacred space of potential, transformation, and ancestral wisdom.
The Kumulipo, Hawaiʻi's creation chant, begins in the depths of Pō:
"O ke au i kahuli wela ka honua"
"At the time when the earth became hot"
From Pō came all life, all light (Ao), all knowledge. Our kūpuna dwell in Pō, and it is through this realm that we maintain connection to those who came before us. The discharge printing technique—which removes dye to reveal the natural fabric beneath—mirrors this cosmological journey: from darkness (Pō) emerges the natural, the revealed, the transformed.
By pairing the He Mano Ka Niho pattern with the Pō colorway, this hoodie honors both the traditional artistry of Hawaiian pattern-making and the deep cosmological understanding that connects us to our ancestors and to the cycles of creation.
Honor the traditional regalia of our aliʻi, our Hawaiian chiefs, with our Ka Mahiole design, featuring the iconic woven and feathered helmet worn exclusively by chiefs for ceremony and warfare. This striking crop tee captures the intricate craftsmanship of traditional mahiole in vibrant mamo yellow ink on Lehua red fabric.

Crop fit trash tee in Lehua red colorway

Made from 100% reclaimed waste cotton
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified (Grade 1 - highest safety level)
CPSIA and HR4040 compliant printing process
Unisex sizing, cropped fit

Cultural Significance - Sacred Aliʻi Regalia:
The mahiole was the exclusive ceremonial and warfare regalia of Hawaiian aliʻi—never worn by common warriors, but reserved for chiefs who held the mana and authority to lead in both spiritual and military contexts. Each helmet required thousands of precious feathers, primarily from the now-extinct mamo and ʻōʻō birds, making them among the most sacred and valuable objects in Hawaiian society.
These magnificent headdresses represented not just the rank and spiritual power of aliʻi, but also the incredible artistry and deep cultural knowledge of our kūpuna who created these sacred objects. The mahiole was a manifestation of chiefly mana, connecting the aliʻi to the natural world and their ancestral responsibilities.
Inspired by the powerful storytelling in the Chief of War series, this design celebrates the sacred regalia and leadership traditions of Hawaiian aliʻi, honoring the skilled artistry and spiritual significance of these chiefly adornments.
Handmade: Please note that pattern placement and color can vary from images shown. Pattern will naturally soften and fade over extended use & washing.

Cultural Context - MAI KAHIKO MAI Series
This design is part of our MAI KAHIKO MAI (From Ancient Times) series, celebrating the continuity of Hawaiian warrior culture and the living traditions that connect us to our kūpuna. Each piece honors the mana, artistry, and spiritual significance of traditional Hawaiian craftsmanship.

The nahele green colorway evokes the lush forest landscapes of Kauaʻi during hoʻoilo, the rainy season that replenishes the ʻāina.

Cultural Significance - ʻŌlelo Noʻeau & Ancestral Weather Wisdom:
"Kaʻi ka puaʻa i luna o Hāʻupu, e ua ana"
When the pigs follow above Hāʻupu, it is going to rain.
This ʻōlelo noʻeau encodes ancestral weather wisdom into the memory of kānaka local to the Kauaʻi region where Hāʻupu mountain stands visible and revered. When clouds gather above Hāʻupu's summit in formations resembling puaʻa treading across the peak, the kūpuna knew rain was coming. This knowledge, passed down through generations and celebrated in mele, connects descendants to the environmental and atmospheric signs that predict the life-giving rains of hoʻoilo.
The name Hāʻupu itself carries profound kaona—it can be translated as "to stir up one to recollection," "to recall," or "to remember suddenly." In wearing this design, we are called to remember: to observe the ʻāina closely, to read the signs our kūpuna encoded for us, and to honor the wisdom that flows from place.
The Design Elements:
This crop trash tee illustrates the full scene of this weather prediction:
Hāʻupu mountain face crowned with puff clouds at the summit
Gentle rain falling in drops, bringing life-giving water
Kukui tree branch heavy with hua kukui (kukui nuts) and falling lau (leaves)
Puaʻa foraging for kukui nuts below
The puaʻa naturally seek kukui nuts as a nutritious part of their diet, and in this design, their presence during the rain carries the kaona of purification, the Lonoikamakahiki season of replenishment, and the protected proliferation of hoʻoilo (the rainy season).
Kukui: Light from Darkness:
The kukui nut itself symbolizes the potential of knowledge and light—kukui means "light" or "torch." Just as the hoʻoilo season is a time of pō (darkness, rest, gestation) that gives way to the kau wela season of ao (light, growth, activity), this design honors the cyclical wisdom of Hawaiian seasons and the balance between rest and abundance.
The falling kukui leaves represent hāʻule lau—the falling of leaves that marks the transition into the cooler, wetter months when the land rests and replenishes.
